This is an actual question Judi received from a future member and her response:

Q: What do you find separates this group from the others out there?

A: You have no idea how much I love this question.  Four years ago, when I started a new business and learned about 'networking' I went to every type meeting I could find.  All of them very slightly different and I liked parts of all of each of them.  What I like to say is "I took the best and rest the left."

Some of the differences include:

  • meeting every other week, instead of weekly
  • no minimum number of referrals, based on quality of the referral not the quantity of them.
  • all women
  • over in exactly one hour
  • no extra cost for food or a meal
  • an actual team spirit - if the person I need is not in my chapter, I look to another TW chapter.  All members and their contact info available on one site.
  • ability to visit any chapter which does not have my core profession filled
  • chamber membership as part of membership in a number of chapters
I could go on and on.  What I would say instead is come the kick off of the meeting on the 22nd and see for yourself.  Team Women Rocks!

Need some new ideas for chapter members? Want to make sure you're classified correctly within your core profession?

Check out our newly posted Core Professions List.

To maintain consistency and fairness, each new member will be asked to choose her core profession from the list.

Where do I Begin,Team Women?

As a business woman and the self proclaimed “Queen Networker,” I constantly teach people their two most important assets in business are:

1. Your Time – lots of people think it is money and my belief is while you can always get more money, you can never make up for lost time.

2. Your Contact List – the people you know and do business with, the ones who trust you, like you and know what you do and refer business to you.

These two are invaluable assets and it is so critical to know and appreciate that. And today I was reminded also to be very grateful for the relationships you have built.

Time and the power of relationships are the foundation of what Team Women stands for. In his book, Never Eat Alone, Keith Ferrazi’s definition of networking is “Connecting – sharing my knowledge and resources, time and energy, friends and associates and empathy and compassion in a continual effort to provide value to others, while coincidentally increasing my own. Like business itself, a connector is not about managing transactions, but about managing relationships.”

The relationships you build truly are priceless and I had an amazing reminder of that in my own life in the last 24 hours. Like most of us, I wear many different hats and explain it by saying – I have my fun business, I have my business which pays the bills, and I have Team Women which is my passion. And one of my “intentions” this year is to successfully spend time growing and creating more success in each of them.

One of my goals this past weekend was to get all three monthly newsletters done for my three businesses. I am blessed to be married to my wonderful husband Kevin, whom the TW Staff lovingly calls Tech Support. He provides all my fabulous graphic support in addition to working a full time day job. So on weekends, we really have to crank it and crank we did this past Saturday and Sunday. All day Saturday was spent preparing and publishing newsletter number one and it went out about 9 pm Saturday evening.

Sunday at 8 am we were back in the office working on newsletter number two and we completed it at 10:30 last night. Ok, we would have been done sooner, but we did take a Super Bowl break mid day. Kevin was ready to go to bed and I just wanted to do one more thing which was to send this newsletter out, so I could start bright and early on the Team Women Newsletter this morning. In retrospect, I just should have gone to bed and sent newsletter number two out this morning when I was not so tired. I know I am a morning person and almost always take that into account.

When I selected the group to send the newsletter to, I apparently selected all the people who should NOT get that particular newsletter instead of the people who should. When some return emails for bad addresses started to come in, I started getting a funny feeling in my stomach. The bounces were coming from people who should not have received that newsletter. By 1 am I was sickeningly certain of what I had done wrong and was mortified.

In Team Women we have a policy of focusing on one core profession. I had accidentally sent info to the wrong group of folks and was just sick about it. I was embarrassed and so upset I knew I had to immediately send out an explanation and apology letter. So at 2 am, I woke Kevin up to come help me send out another email - which he did. (He is a keeper!) By the time I finally got to bed it was close to 3:30 and then I could not sleep.

When I woke this morning, I was afraid to turn on my computer because I thought people were going to be angry at me. Here is a sampling of what I found awaiting me in my inbox:

~ No problem, I’m sure all of us have done this at one time or another.  Get some rest.

~ HI Judi, No worries…I have 3 lists too and I know how it is.

~ Dear Judi, Do not stress about this…it is okay! Thank you for the heads up.

~ Not a problem at all. Believe me, I wish there were a recall button on mail sent that you could pull back in 30 seconds or so.

~Judi, Don't be so hard on yourself. It was an innocent mistake. Hopefully everyone is selective about what's really important and this error was not a big deal. I would not take it personally if someone was offended by it because he/she probably has other issues.

~Don’t worry about it, Judi! It was good information anyway.

~ Judi, No problem - accidents happen and when we are running on empty we have a few additional ones.

~ It does my heart good to know someone as accomplished and wonderful as you are makes the same goofy mistakes as I do sometimes.  I can’t imagine that ANYONE in Team Women is inconvenienced at all.  I’ve deleted my entire Team Women Blank mailing list THREE times now as I’ve tried to rearrange recipients.  What an idiot!  Can’t wait to see you next week.

~ Not a problem.  I have done this once or twice in my career....

~ I enjoyed the newsletter! Hope you had a restful sleep.

~ Don't worry, Judi. We all make mistakes. Don't beat yourself up and have a great week!

Yes, I have been crying very grateful tears this morning for the compassion, understanding and support I have received. And yes, there were a few who asked to have their names deleted and were very nice about.

My point- When you belong to a chapter of Team Women it is about a lot more that getting a referral at every meeting. It is about forging powerful, loyal relationships to support you throughout your entire career. All success begins by giving and coincidentally (as Keith says,) your business will begin to grow also.

I am so thankful and abundantly grateful to be blessed by so many wonderful people in my life. Thanks for being there. And please let me know how I can support you.

Keep Networking,
Judi

"Some of the biggest challenges in relationships come from the fact that most people enter a relationship in order to get something. They're trying to find someone who's going to make them feel good. In reality, the only way a relationship will last is if you see your relationship as a place that you go to give, and not a place that you go to take." - Anthony Robbins

Shelly Toombs has worked with several direct sales companies with the main objective of making a little extra money to stay home with her 4 kids. She loves the freedom the industry gives individuals looking to supplement their income.

In October of 2005, when Shelly first heard of WineShop At Home she wasn't looking to change companies. Her first thought was that it was a "genius" idea that would work well within the direct sales industry. "90% of the time when someone hosts a direct sales party they have wine there for the guests!" After a Napa road trip for their anniversary Shelly and her husband stopped by the WineShop at Home headquarters to see "what was up with this wine thing."  "We got a personal tour and met one of the owners who shared a little bit about what WineShop was about. I walked out of the office telling my husband I was quitting my other business and going to drink wine for a living!"

"I feel there isn't another company out there that can come close to what WineShop is creating in the direct sales industry. They have truly created a lifestyle opportunity for their consultants. I look forward to helping others drink wine for a living and create their own Wine Lifestyle.

I've been a Team Women member for over 3 years and am currently in the Point Loma, CA chapter. This type of networking has helped me grow financially as well as personally. Women are amazing networkers and are great at promoting businesses operated by other women.  In our current economy, it is more important than ever to stay connected and build relationships in the community. By doing this through TW  I have a good feeling that 2009 is going to be an exceptional year filled with opportunity.

Team Women University

Please plan to join us on Tuesday, February 24th at 10am Pacific for our next Team Women University call. We are working out the details with an amazing speaker and will make an announcement with all the details as soon as possible.

If you missed last month's call with Deborah Cole Micek, aka "The Motivation MD," be sure to check out the recording available to Team Women members in the Members Only section of the website.

Deb gave us a great overview of using Twitter and other social media to grow our presence and make connections with power partners. It was fun to see how many people joined Twitter and sent "tweets" to each other during the call!

For more information, you can visit Deb's website, or order her book, Twitter Revolution. (Click on book cover image for more information or to order through amazon.com.)

I've been a Team Women member from very early on. I have to say it's the one single thing that has done more for my business than any other. I have made some great friends along the way, and expanded my business considerably. If you are wondering if it works, go to a meeting and see the variety of interesting businesses and women there. Other networking and lead generating organizations are strict and stressful- Team Women is fun and energizing! - Julie Edwards, East County, CA

Hi Deneen, It was so nice meeting you and Judi today!  Her spirit is absolutely contagious.  I am very excited to begin working with Team Women.  This is exactly what I have been longing for.  I was considering sending an e-mail to my list of 500 current guests to see who is in business for themselves and interested in Team Women...Thank you so much for bringing this into our lives!-  Laura Pantini, New Haven, CT

Wow…..this is a great group of women and being in San Antonio without any support in advertising from my company, I have not only done business in my chapter but they have introduced me to other resources. I have actually signed up 4 new customers and have received several referrals and to me that is something money just can't buy! Thank you to my TEAM! - Renee L Neilson, San Antonio, TX

I just have to say how impressed I am with Team Women – already.  Each one has taken the time to personally e-mail me a welcome note.  That’s amazing.  They have made me feel so comfortable.  I am quite excited about our future, our referrals, & the endless potential we have as a group – 2009 will be the best because of Team Women!!! Thank you! - Lisa Ordaz, Rancho Santa Fe, CA

Combat Stress in the Workplace: First Line of Defense – Laugh!
By Suzanne Jones, Team Women Scottsdale, AZ

There is nothing more physically freeing than a prolonged belly laugh. Medical studies prove that laughter affects our overall health and well-being. Humor is an excellent tool to deflect pain, diffuse tense situations and better cope with life’s curveballs. So how can you use laughter in stressful work situations? Unless you want a co-worker to speed dial the closest mental health facility, you cannot burst out laughing during an important presentation, giggle after missing a critical deadline, or chuckle while speaking to an irritated customer.

Before delving into using humor to avoid an unplanned vacation to the Nervous Breakdown Spa, let’s examine a few of today’s popular stress busters. You will quickly realize how laughter trumps them all in terms of practicality, accessibility and affordability.

Yoga – Although yoga has its benefits, you can’t drop to the floor and twist your body into ‘downward dog’ or ‘upturned noodle’ during a stressful conversation.

Massage –A massage would be lovely every time you are faced with workplace stress, but hiring Antonio to chip away at your cement-like neck and shoulders just isn’t practical. Not only will your checkbook suffer, you will also have to dispel rumors about his frequent visits.

Retail Therapy – Shopping is a perennial favorite of overstressed women. But when credit cards are maxed, and closets are so overstuffed they are close to a Mt. St. Helens eruption, know there are better ways.

Hot Bath – This is fabulous for sleepy time but who can slide into a lavender-scented bubble bath at work? Using the office restroom sink to immerse one body part at a time in tepid water just isn’t the same.

This brings us to laughter and how we can use its substantial power to alleviate stress at work. Jettison any pre-conceived notions on the appropriateness of laughter in the workplace. Think of laughter as a mental mini-trip to your doctor, spa and therapist combined.

A stressful workplace issue many of us face revolves around finances. Your business may be suffering from decreased sales, credit to run your operations may be tightening, your 401 has shrunk to a paltry 201, and employees are fearful for their jobs. The fear may even be impacting productivity and attitudes. Sound familiar?

Laughter can be used to get back on track. Think about a funeral (sounds odd but trust me). Someone’s loved one passed away and there is rampant grief and sadness. This is truly the worst of times for that family. Then observe them closely. You will see family members slowly gather together as a team and recount stories about the person who passed on. You will soon see a smile emerge or hear a muffled giggle, followed by outright laughter. Others chime in and what was a somber, heart-wrenching time has turned into a positive, uplifting event.

The same principle applies to your business during these incredibly challenging times. Gather your troops and acknowledge what is occurring in your business without dwelling on the situation. Talk about the fun and rewarding times you had in the past and will have again in the future. Every company has funny stories to share. Work as a team to recall company events, team retreats, holiday parties, and any other laughter-inducing incidents that morphed into company lore. The funnier the better – it doesn’t matter what the story is but that everyone has a connection to it. Make it a contest and vote on the most hilarious incident. Turn it into a buzzword and use it frequently to keep up the momentum. Now that everyone is in the right frame of mind, you can tackle your issues more effectively. If you instill positive thinking and set positive intentions, you will be amazed how these seemingly inconsequential gestures can help you and your company cope even in dire conditions.

You can apply this concept even if you are a one-woman operation. Think about why you started your own business and funny incidents that happened along the way. Focus on the one memory that makes you laugh every single time and use it when you start to have negative ‘what’s-the-use’ feelings. Laughter works and it’s free!

Will laughter cure all your workplace stresses? Of course not, but it will give you physical and mental relief, change your perspective, and open your mind to creative solutions. There is always a silver lining even in our darkest times. The silver may not be from Tiffany’s but it represents hope that brighter days are ahead. So, when in doubt – laugh it out!

"The most important ingredient we put into any relationship is not what we say or what we do, but what we are." - Stephen R. Covey
