Below is a question Judi received through the Team Women Facebook page and her response:

Q: I've been a member for a while now and have only had one or two referrals. I'm getting frustrated. Why isn't this working?

A: Thanks so much for being a member of Team Women. I appreciate your question and welcome the opportunity to offer some solutions.

1. Quality networking is a process and not an event and is based upon building solid relationships. Those relationships take time to develop and nourish. Since you have been a member for less than two months, you may still be in the "getting to know and trust you" phase and my suggestion is to be patient.

2 . Along those same lines, the best way to receive referrals is to give referrals. How many referrals have you provided for the members of your chapter. A great idea for new members is to do an inside referral to as many of your chapter members as you can. You will learn more about what they do, be better able to refer them and create a base for referrals to "come back to you."

3 . It is important to be at every meeting excited and enthusiastic about supporting the women in your chapter. People make assumptions about your business skills by how you present yourself in your meetings. Be there, be excited and BRING referrals.

Don't just ask for referrals, DESERVE THEM!

Need some new ideas for chapter members? Want to make sure you're classified correctly within your core profession?

Check out our newly posted Core Professions List.

To maintain consistency and fairness, each new member will be asked to choose her core profession from the list.

Creating Success,Team Women!

This weekend I attended the first ever Jack Canfield one day workshop on The Success Principles which was fabulous.  I have fewer than five great mentors I follow and Jack is definitely one of them.  One of the topics he discussed was his book "The Power of Focus."  Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt interviewed 100s of successful people to determine what the common characteristics of success were among them.

Jack spoke of what he felt were the three most important to be used together.

3 Key Characteristics of Successful People

1.  They have unusual clarity

2.  They have developed successful habits

3.  They take 100% responsibility for their lives (Success Principle #1)

Several months ago, we spoke about taking 100% responsibility for our lives.  In this issue, the focus will be "developing unusual clarity."  My definition would include the following:

~ to be able to clearly identify and explain why you do what you do

~ to explain your business with out a moment's hesitation and how it supports others

~ to have a clear vision of where you will be the next day, the next week, the next year and in ten years

~ to wake up every morning with a clearly defined plan of what you need to do to move your business forward that day

~ to understand every obstacle is simply a message; there may be another way

~ to not have a doubt what you do is important and worthwhile

~ to see the big picture clearly in your mind

~ to be excited every single day by the opportunities you have

At the workshop, each time I spoke to someone new I asked the following question: "What do you love most about what you do?"  I did get a couple of strange looks yet after a pause each person answered.  The general contractor said, "being creative and helping families create homes they love."  The recruiter's was, "helping people to earn a livelihood doing something they love."  My answer is, "creating the space for people to acheive all they were meant to in life."

What do you love most about what you do?  Are you totally clear on what you are doing and why?  Developing clarity makes taking the next step easier and more directed.  Take some time to get clear.

Keep Networking,
Judi

Darcy Stevenson came to Team Women as a member in February of 2006. She recently celebrated her third year anniversary as a member of Team Women San Benito County where she promotes her fitness business, CoachingFit. As a fitness coach, Darcy provides encouragement and support to individuals who want to achieve healthier living through structured physical fitness programs.  We asked Darcy what has kept her with Team Women for three consecutive years and here is what she had to say:

“I’m a Team Women groupie! Team Women has helped me find a whole new me. From the time I launched the first chapter in our area until present day, I have learned so much about myself as a person and as a professional. I have overcome fears of presenting in groups, learned problem solving skills, time management skills, organizational skills, and communication skills that were different or new to me and that have worked for me in my business. Not to mention the many fantastic women that I have met along the way, the life-long friendships, and the referrals for my business. I couldn’t have imagined networking before Team Women because it meant being outside of my comfort zone, and now I cannot imagine networking without Team Women! I wholeheartedly believe in the mission of Team Women, which is women supporting women in growing their businesses.”

Darcy’s enthusiasm for Team Women really showed when she joined Judi Finneran as a staff member in May of 2006. Since then, Darcy has grown with the company as Member Services Manager and most recently named Northern California Area Manager. Darcy will now be responsible for helping new chapters launch in the Northern California area in addition to her continued support of Member Service needs. When do you have time to work your business, we asked?

“Every time I am at a chapter meeting, new chapter launch, or sourcing new members!!!! Every new contact for Team Women is a new potential contact for my business.”

A Full Circle for Moms in Business
By Erica Sweeney, Team Women Solana Beach, CA

Some people say you are either a mom or a business professional and that you can’t have it all. I actually may have believed this at one time in my life. When thrust into the position of either falling into deep self pity, sorrow, and despair or rising above and making it happen, my instincts as an intelligent, strong, confident, independent woman kicked in!

You can make the choice to have it all. It takes some balancing, or as I like to call it, a smooth full circle. Most people relate to balance, but in reality there is more to our lives than a balancing act – we are more like jugglers. Moms in business deal with finances, relationships, mental health, physical health and spirituality.

In order to rearrange and smooth out the bumps in your circle successfully, first ask yourself this question: “Who am I?” Really dig deep into this one - know what your dreams are and remember what they were before marriage and/or children. Are you still filled with desire and passion for life or are you merely existing and striving for goals about which you no longer care?

Making sure you are in a profession for which you have passion is of key importance. If your passion is cooking, writing, drinking wine, or business coaching, you will be most successful if you make sure your passion is somehow incorporated into your profession.

Another important aspect to having a smooth circle is remembering to take time for yourself. It is NOT selfish. When you are getting ready for takeoff, the flight attendants always say, “In case of an emergency, put your own oxygen mask on before helping others.” You cannot take care of others if you are not taking care of yourself. You, your family and your business will all benefit! When a mom is not happy, her children are not happy. Your family needs you and looks to you to set an example.

I once mentioned to someone that I am happiest spending time with my son or working, but when I found myself with some time without either one of these things, my mind wandered and I found myself feeling lonely, empty, and just plain sad. My friend said to me, “I know you love your child and you love your job, but what else do you love?”

As women we have a unique opportunity to experience all life has to offer. We are not “just” our job, our children, or our marriage, but we must each also remember to keep our own individuality as part of our circle. We have our own thoughts, our own opinions, our own dreams, and our own goals. We are women of great strength and power. We are the bread winners, the nurturers, and the friends who listen and give advice.

As mothers in business, we have been given a great gift. It is up to each of us to have, be, and do all that we desire. Be grateful for what is in your life right now and for what is coming down the road. Remember, you create your own destiny, so make it a good one and enjoy a smooth ride!

"One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular." - Tony Robbins
